A lively and vibrant community, Chapel Hill is known for its many activities and events throughout the year. Since it’s the home of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill has seen a population boom in recent years, and this growing town now acts as a melting pot for natives and new residents alike. Valuing art, education and cultural enrichment, Chapel Hill offers many ways to bring residents together throughout the year.
No matter if you’re new to the area or simply want to shake up your routine, there are plenty of fun experiences to be had in Chapel Hill, especially during the summer months! Check out some of my personal favorites as inspiration for your to-do list.
Get Groovin’
If you love live music, Friday After Hours is the event is for you! Every Sunday from April to September, catch a free concert at Market Street at Southern Village. These outdoor concerts feature local musicians and showcase a wide variety of genres and styles. Ranging from jazz to Grateful Dead cover bands, these concerts are a great way to listen to your favorites and discover new music!
Since these concerts take place outside, patrons are encouraged to make an evening of the event and pack a picnic. Friday After Hours is an all ages event, so there is plenty of room for the younger crowd to roam while adults listen to the tunes.
Catch a Free Flick
Every Thursday, join the Town of Chapel Hill for a night of food, fun, and film! Come early to Wallace Plaza to join The Circulator for all-ages fun and activities before the featured movie. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and pack a picnic, or eat dinner at of one wonderful restaurants downtown.
Free popcorn is available for all participants, but you’re more than welcome to purchase more concessions from local vendors..
4th of July Festivities
While 4th of July is a highly anticipated event all over the country, Chapel Hill channels their love of celebrating Independence Day by offering several events throughout the week, creating a days-long jubilee. From July 1st to July 4th, check out one of the many unique events put on by the local community.
Watch a laser light show at Pittsboro Summer Fest, get your food truck fill at Hillsborough Independence Day Picnic, or participate in a watermelon seed spitting contest at Chapel Hill’s July 4th Fireworks Celebration. With such a wide variety of events of activities, you’ll be sure to find something fun!
